I am so pleased to find this new community for learning and sharing couture sewing. I have been sewing for a very long time but there have been many years when I merely inspected the designs, fabric and quality of RTW. My interest in actually sewing has resurfaced and I have the time to indulge myself. As I ramble around trying to remember techniques I learned 30 years ago, I enjoy connecting with others who can teach me more. I love the prospect of finding friends all over the world who love fabrics, design and the satisfying process of constructing a fine garment.
I remember loving doll dresses. My mother was always sewing, and she was an excellent teacher. Her standards were high and she appreciated fine quality and pointed it out to me when she saw it. We rarely had the money to buy the quality fabric she would have liked, nor the time to sew everything for a household with the hand sewing that marks couture. However, by today's standards the material and the quality was superb. I absorbed her aesthetic sensitivity, and over the years whether I was sewing or not, I have been touching fabrics and analyzing what made a perfect fit. It is somewhat of a conflict that I love economy, simplicity and function and dirty work as well as high fashion, beautiful couture, expensive fabrics and perfection. However, there is a time to say "that's enough" for everything.
Learning when to use different underlinings, understanding the possible unexpected consequences of any decision (especially around pattern drafting), where and how to find the most economical fabrics, patterns, time management techniques, tool,and gathering places to share in the fun and joy of discovery.
