As we are slowly gaining critical mass shall we brainstorm on possible couture challenges, sew-alongs, and, in later future, contests?
I thought about kicking off with monthly challenges. Should they be technique- or project-based. Maybe technique-based is more feasible. Mastering some specific technique on a sample or a project? Any thoughts appreciated!

I like the idea of a technique focused challenge - a couture project can take many weeks, so maybe not feasible for everyone to complete within a month and with other sewing/jobs/obligations?
Just a thought - great idea, challenges are what we need sometimes to move out of the comfort zone.

Maybe, then we should come up with a list of 'top ten' couture techniques to master and do one a month. Please do post your suggestions as well and we can vote at the end. Shall we try to figure out the list and the order til end of July and start in August? I can't wait It would be cool to award points for extra effort (variations on a technique, etc...) I think we also need some kind of blog badge to promote this - I can do it next week... I am so excited

Love this idea! Technique-based works best for me, too. Some suggestions include hand-picked zippers in different weight fabrics, a couture hand-stitch sampler (which can serve as a reference), narrow-rolled hem by hand and machine, bound buttonholes, hand-stitched buttonholes, welted pockets, etc.

Oooooooo...hand stitched buttonholes - those always give me the hairy canary...haven't tried them yet.

I like the ideas presented so far. Iamb particularly interested in the hand stitched button hole as I have some lovely Chanel fabric and Claire's patter, but it is the button holes that are completely intimidating me.

Great ideas! This is what we got so far: - a hand-picked zipper (on different weight fabrics)
- hand stitches sampler
- narrow hem by hand
- narrow hem by machine
- bound buttonholes
- hand-worked buttonholes
- welt pockets
I'd add - one-thread dart (for transparent fabrics)
- balanced dart
- horsehair braid hem
- faced hem
- converting darts to ease
So far we have almost everyone interested in hand-worked buttonholes? Pls comment and I'll put up the list for voting this weekend

I'd also add a bound slit and/or hemmed slit for the front of blouses, for example.

I, too, like the idea of technique focused challenge. I need to become more computer literate on this board so I can post pics.

Hi, everyone! It seems we were all busy in August, or the idea of monthly challenges was to premature In any case, I wanted to ask you whether we should try another one - we could keep hand-worked buttonholes as the challenge or choose a new one. Is there anything we can do better this time? I'd love to hear your suggestions as I am really looking forward to this forum to pick up and become a great resource for all couture enthusiasts

Good morning Marina! I'm still interested in participating in the challenges - and completing this one. August just got the best of me though I did make an attempt to work on the buttonhole (not worthy of posting at this time). In the meantime, I've been gathering additional online and printed resources that can help me visualize the proper needle and thread position for making the buttonhole stitch - specifically the bead - because it's so easy to revert to making a blanket stitch instead if the thread and needle aren't held just right. Perhaps another challenge could be added in case a different technique is used more often by the forum participants?
