Fellow members, this is so exciting! Our first challenge!
Let's talk about some rules (and I'd try to keep the challenges easy to follow for everyone)
The stitch
- Make a sample of the buttonhole stitch on a muslin, with appr. 5cm (2") length. Try using appropriate thread, waxed or not.
- Extra points for trying to make a sample on another fabric, wool, tweed, or even boucle??? experiment with thread weight
The buttonhole
- Make a step-by-step buttonhole on a muslin, take pictures as you go.
- Extra points for trying to make a sample buttonhole on fashion fabric of your choice (something more challenging than a muslin)
Extra points
- Write a blog post highlighting the steps, resources and useful tips; write a tutorial... up to you
- Use hand-worked buttonholes in a real garment
- Post a master class here, in the forum
Let's try to finish some or all of these tasks in August, more or less. If you need a day or two more, it is not a problem, but we will have another challenge in September, so plan accordingly.
Posting
- Post your questions and discuss here, in this thread. There is a separate thread for finished samples (so we can refer to them easily).
- Use one close up shot of the finished buttonhole(s).
- For step-by-step photos try to use a collage tool. PicMonkey is web-based and user friendly for that purpose.
This post is open to changes and last minute adjustments, so if you find something too ridiculous, or complicated, or redundant, let's talk
Sponsors
Let's introduce end of the year awards for the most persistent couturiers here, right? So, if you know a sponsor, or want to be one, let us know. Pattern, fabric, notions, class coupons are some ideas...

Great tutorial for the start: williamsclothiers.com/2012/01/hand-tailored-buttonhole-tutorial/
If you want to suggest more resources, let me know, I'll be adding them here!
Good luck, everyone!
